SICK BUILDING SYNDROME

Sick building syndrome is a broad label covering a range of symptoms that are believed to occur when a person spends time in a particular building. Symptoms range from specific symptoms, such as itchy eyes, skin rashes, and nasal allergy symptoms, to more vague symptoms, such as fatigue, aches and pains, and sensitivity to odors.

 

The term "sick building syndrome" was first used in the 1970s, and its diagnosis at the time may be partly related to the increasing presence of electronic equipment and other factors. It is used when the symptoms of a large number of people in the building are related to their presence in this building. In most cases, sick building syndrome occurs in office buildings, although it can also occur in other community buildings such as schools and blocks of flats.

The actual health effects experienced by an individual will depend on many factors, including the nature of the source, the level and duration of exposure, and personal sensitivity to it.

 

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there is a strong suspicion of sick building syndrome when the following circumstances occur:

The symptoms are temporally related to the time spent in a particular building or part of it

• Symptoms disappear when the person is not in the building
• Symptoms recur seasonally (heating, cooling)
• Colleagues and associates have noticed similar complaints
